Why is it important to pick the right name for your puppy?
When you’re looking through lists of dog names that start with a “C,” always choose a short name that’s not too complicated. If the name takes an age to say, your pup won’t remember it, and it will make calling him to come to you a very lengthy process! However, if you find a dog name that you really love but is quite long, you can still choose it, just shorten the name to a nickname that’s easier for your pup to learn.
Important considerations when choosing dog names that start with C
When you’re hunting for dog names that start with C, there are few very important considerations to bear in mind. Don’t choose a very long, complicated name that your dog will find difficult to remember. Focus on names that have only one or two syllables and that roll easily off your tongue.
You don’t want to find yourself in the dog park, yelling something complicated that your dog won’t hear or recognize easily! If you already have pets in your home, don’t pick a dog name that starts with C that sounds very similar to the name of one of your pup’s new housemates. Imagine the confusion that would happen if your cat came running every time you called your puppy!
Where can you find ideas for dog names that start with a C?
There are lots of sources of inspiration that you can use to find dog names that start with C. For example, you might have a really good buddy or a favorite uncle or aunt whose name starts with C, and you may decide to name your puppy after them. Or how about using a country or state that begins with C as a source of inspiration?
Movie stars, rock gods, and trendy bands can also have names that would look good on a dog. Just bear in mind that these kinds of names can quickly go out of fashion and become meaningless. However, if you really love a name that’s currently en vogue and you’re sure you won’t get tired of it, don’t let that put you off!
Smart dog names beginning with C
Don’t choose a dog name that starts with C that could be muddled up with one of your chosen training commands that you’re going to use with your new puppy. For example, “Clay” does sound an awful lot like “stay,” especially when shouted from a distance across a park or beach on a windy day.
Be sure to select a name that begins with C that you really love and that you won’t quickly get bored with. Similarly, be careful when choosing names that are very “of the moment.” For example, names that are associated with current films or pop stars can quickly go out of fashion, and you can’t expect your dog to learn a new name just because you changed your mind!
Finally, it’s not a good idea to pick a very common name that lots of other dogs already have. That will cause chaos in the dog park when you call out “Chuck!” and every other dog on the block comes running to you!
Dog names that start with C
Although it can be great fun, choosing a great name for your new puppy carries a lot of responsibility! First of all, you really do need to pick a name that’s easy for your puppy to learn. The name should be short and snappy and not something that’s very current or could quickly go out of fashion.

I’m a big fan of unique dog names. Since I compete with mine, names and commands need to stand out. My last coonhound was a female named Olwen. My new male will be Culhwch. Culhwch and Olwen were in a tale from an ancient Arthurian text called The Mabinogion. I took an Arthurian rromance class in college, and always remembered this story. His registered name will be “kennel name The Mabinogion”. It’s either that, or Caibre (think Scottish highland games).

I named my heeler pup Cyrus – I have a traumatic brain injury and needed to remember dog’s name and in years to come, his age. Cyrus rhymes with virus. He was born in 2020.
